Arizona wasn’t expected to do much in coach Steve Wilks’ first season. But there were a few folks who thought Sam Bradford could work miracles with one wide receiver and David Johnson.
The miracle didn’t happen and the Josh Rosen era began. Larry Fitzgerald almost has to be wondering why he didn’t retire and Johnson is wondering how far his 2019 NFL Fantasy League draft position will drop.
But… if the Cardinals can win Sunday, they will tie a preseason playoff favorite in the standings.
Atlanta thought they could be the first NFL team to play in a Super Bowl hosted in their own stadium. Instead, they are a loss away from capturing the first overall draft pick.
Injuries and a difficult first-quarter schedule left the Falcons at 1-4. But after three straight wins, fans believed their team could push for a postseason bid.
But then the wheels fell off. Atlanta will face the Cardinals in hopes of breaking a five-game losing streak and giving their fans a reason to smile in their last home game of the season.
Owner Arthur Blank also owns Atlanta’s Major League Soccer (MLS) team. They won the city’s first sports championship in a whole lot of years last week.
The Falcons are left to lament what could have been if two Atlanta football teams were vying for a championship.
Injuries and notes
Atlanta lists two tight ends, Austin Hooper (knee) and Logan Paulsen (knee) as questionable for Sunday.
Arizona linebackers Deone Bucannon (chest) and wide receiver Chad Williams (ankle) as questionable.
Steve Wilks’ early season moves were the fodder of many sports radio and Twitter conversations. He followed through on his edict that the hardest working and better-playing players would be on the field and cut or sat several starters or veterans in favor of rookies and backups. While the team didn’t win many games, the remaining Cardinals have gelled into a unified team that is playing hard for their coach.
Atlanta’s Dan Quinn is suffering as hard as or harder than anyone else in the Atlanta area. Although the team’s owner has accepted the role of injuries and committed to Quinn as the 2019 head coach, the coach isn’t satisfied with the results on the field. That’s one reason why Blank wants him back.

Playoff-bound teams sometimes need the coach to convince them not to look past lesser opponents and risk an upset.
Atlanta’s season has gone so awry, Dan Quinn will need to convince his Falcons squad that this is a winnable game if they come out and play hard. They will.
